Something magical is happening across the Southwest United States: teams of Quidditch players are descending upon the GWFSA Soccer Complex located on Southwest Parkway. There they will take the field, doing broom-mounted battle until the single surviving team is crowned victorious. It’s time for the Southwest Regional Championship!
Quidditch is no longer limited to the Harry Potter books and movies: it’s a full-contact, gender-integrated sport that first burst onto the pitch in 2005. Teams from Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas will dodge bludgers, throw quaffles, and chase down the golden snitch in hopes of winning the right to attend the national championship, the US Quidditch Cup. Quidditch fans will have the opportunity to cheer on their favorite team, buy merchandise like t-shirts & trading cards, and meet other Harry Potter fans!
Want to try the sport for the first time? They will be teaching youth quidditch Saturday at 2:15 pm and Sunday at 1:45 pm to elementary, middle, and high school students. You do not have to sign up in advance to participate, just stop by the HQ tent on-site. All participants must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Waivers will be available at the event; however, you may also request a waiver in advance by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org.
